Baptism & Chrismation
Baptism is the foundational sacrament of the Church, marking the initiation of a person into the Christian faith.
It involves a sacred rite of triple immersion in water, symbolizing the individual’s death to sin and resurrection to new life in Christ. Through this sacrament, the person is cleansed from all past sins, reborn, and incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church. It is through Baptism that one becomes a member of the Church and is granted the grace to begin their spiritual journey, living according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The act is usually accompanied by the recitation of the Nicene Creed, the renunciation of Satan, and the affirmation of faith in the Holy Trinity. Additionally, a godparent or sponsor is chosen to support the baptized individual in their spiritual growth. This sacrament is available to all of God's beloved, welcoming everyone into the fold of the Christian community, regardless of age, background, or previous beliefs. Chrismation, or Confirmation, is the sacrament that immediately follows Baptism in the Orthodox Church.
It involves the anointing of the baptized person with Holy Chrism (consecrated myrrh), signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit. This sacrament completes the process of initiation into the Church, empowering the individual to live a life of faith and virtue. The priest anoints various parts of the body, including the forehead, eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, chest, hands, and feet, each time saying, "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit." Through Chrismation, the believer receives the fullness of the Holy Spirit, which strengthens them to grow in holiness and witness to their faith. This sacrament is available to all of God's beloved, affirming their place within the Orthodox faith and equipping them with spiritual gifts to fulfill their Christian mission.
